About the Artist
Marcia Haufrecht's paintings evoke domestic intimacy through understated scenes of urban and pastoral sensibilities. Haufrecht uses vibrant oil paints and flat textures to great compositional effect in her landscapes and portraits, which tend towards fields of impressionistic colors broken up by dramatic black surfaces. This contrast between the lighthearted pastels and the depth of the black paint is particularly noteworthy in Haufrecht's portraits, where the human subject is emphasized. Additionally, the quality of Haufrecht's paints creates a noticeable warmth and adds an illustrative quality to the paintings.
Compositionally, Haufrecht often hides her subjects' faces, whether it's through painting only their shadows, or having the subjects turned away from the viewer. Even fully visibly people in Haufrecht's work tend to draw the viewer's gaze outside the frame. This sense of continuum and secrecy is enticing and helps to humanize Haufrecht's stylized depictions. Haufrecht's landscapes, however, contain a clearer impressionistic influence, with the composition reflecting the more abstract side of her work. This versatility is self-acknowledged, with Haufrecht stating she "use[s] whatever method or style best expresses the subject."
Marcia Haufrecht currently lives and works in Manhattan.
