United Solo Theatre Festival will present The Mushroom Cure, written and performed by Adam Strauss on Monday, October 28th at 9 PM at Theatre Row, 410 West 42nd Street (between 9th & 10th). Tickets $18 - 212-239-6200 or telecharge.com.
Inspired by a scientific study showing that hallucinogenic mushrooms can potentially cure obsessive-compulsive disorder, Adam Strauss embarked on his own program of vigilante psychopharmacology. As he uncovers an underground community of clandestine chemists, falls in love with a brilliant psychologist who takes him on as her unofficial research subject, and decamps to a remote island accompanied only by his geriatric pug dog and a formidable pharmacopoeia, Adam's relentless pursuit of his unorthodox cure is at once hilarious, harrowing, and heartrending.
The Mushroom Cure premiered in August at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, garnering widespread praise:
This completely true story crests a growing wave of scientific and mainstream interest in the medical use of hallucinogenic drugs.
One of New York's most in-demand stand ups and storytellers, Adam was a winner of the Leffe Craft Your Character Storytelling Competition. He is currently penning a memoir based on The Mushroom Cure. More info at http://adamstrauss.com/.
