Adam Gopnik to Lead 'IMAGINING JERUSALEM' Series at The Met This Fall

To accompany The Met's major exhibition Jerusalem 1000-1400: Every People Under Heaven, MetSpeaks will present a stimulating and comprehensive series-on October 5, 19, 24, and 26-that examines the Holy City of Jerusalem as a melting pot of hybrid cultures, and how it has inspired and resonated with civilizations throughout the ages.

New Yorker critic-at-large Adam Gopnik returns to The Met after his vibrant 1913 series to lead discussions with an exciting lineup of scholars and thought-leaders, exploring the city's many images, poetic uses, and spiritual reverberations.

The four-part series Imagining Jerusalem: The Golden City in Art, Lore, and Literature will begin on Wednesday, October 5, as Gopnik sets the stage with an overview of Jerusalem in a more global context. This series is made possible by the William S. Lieberman Fund.

The talks continue on Wednesday, October 19, when he is joined by Nicole Krauss, author of The History of Love, Man Walks into a Room, Great House, and many other titles. Krauss has a long and deep relationship with Jerusalem, and she joins Adam Gopnik to explore the city's literary history.

On Monday, October 24, Dr. Nasser Rabbat, the Aga Khan Professor and the Director of the Aga Khan Program for Islamic Architecture at MIT, along with Gopnik, discusses the complexity and richness of the city as it is represented through its architecture.

The series concludes on Wednesday, October 26, when Gopnik welcomes Simon Schama, historian and University Professor of History and Art History at Columbia University, to explore the hold that the city has had for millennia on the imaginations of those pining for it from afar.
