At a meeting of the Board of Directors of the Young People's Chorus of New York City on June 18, Adam Chinn, a founding partner of Centerview Partners LLC, an investment advisory firm, was named the Chairman of the Young People's Chorus of New York City (YPC), effective July 1, 2012.
Mr. Chinn initially joined YPC's Board in 2008. He has served as Board Secretary on its Executive Committee, is a founding member of the Development Committee, and serves regularly as a co-chair at YPC's annual Gala. Mr. Chinn has played a critical role in helping raise significant new funds for YPC, bringing in new corporate donors such as Capital One Bank, and was honored with YPC's Corporate Award at the organization's 2009 Gala. His daughter Hannah is an alumna of the chorus.
"We are so pleased that Adam Chinn is our new Board Chairman," said Francisco J. Núñez, YPC founder and artistic director. "His energy, passion, and fervent belief in the YPC mission of diversity and artistic excellence are energizing. Through his roll-up-your-sleeves attitude and ties to the business community, we are excited to begin the next phase of YPC's growth under his leadership."
"I can think of no other New York City organization that cuts across ethnic, racial and socio-economic lines with such ease," said Adam Chinn. "With the dwindling availability of public funds, greater responsibility falls on the private sector to preserve and advance these values. As a parent, I have personally experienced how this organization changed my child's life. Now as YPC begins its 25th year, I look forward to the challenge of continuing, strengthening, and expanding the YPC mission, so that even more than its annual membership of 1200 children can participate in this extraordinary program."
At the June 18 meeting departing Chairman A. Jerry Kremer, was named Chairman Emeritus for his 10 years of service from 2002-12, advising, managing, and guiding the Young People's Chorus of New York City during its most sustained period of growth.
The Young People's Chorus of New York City was founded in 1988 by Francisco J. Núñez, a 2011 MacArthur Fellow, to provide children of all cultural and economic backgrounds with a unique program of music education and choral performance, while advancing a model of artistic excellence and humanity that enriches the community. In 1996 YPC was incorporated as an independent, non-profit organization with an equal commitment to the original mission.
YPC has become among today's most celebrated and influential children's choruses and a model that is being adopted by other choruses worldwide. It currently reaches more than 1200 children annually through its core after-school program, its Satellite program in nine New York City public schools, and national affiliates in Erie, Pennsylvania, and Tenafly, New Jersey. The resident chorus at Frederick P. Rose Hall, home of Jazz at Lincoln Center, YPC performs on four continents. It was recently presented with the nation's highest honor for youth programs, a 2011 National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award from First Lady Michelle Obama.
