Actress and model Doe Avedon, born Dorcas Marie Nowell, died Sunday, according to the New York Times. She was 86 years old.
Avedon appeared on Broadway in The Young and Fair (1948, for which she was awarded a Theater World Award) and in the comedy My Name Is Aquilon the following year.
Avedon's career began with her marriage to photographer Richard Avedon, who suggested the change in name and often photographed his wife, leading her into a career in show business.
After their divorce five years later, Avedon had roles in a movies, including “The High and the Mighty” with John Wayne in 1954, and 1954's “Deep in My Heart” starring José Ferrer. The actress returned to the silver screen three decades later in "Love Streams".
Avedon is survived by four children from her marriage to director Don Siegel: daughters, Anney Siegel-Wamsat and Kit Saldiveri; sons Nowell and Jack Siegel; stepson Kristoffer Tabori; her longtime companion, Michael Liscio; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Richard Avedon died in 2004.
