People.com reports that the Los Angeles County coroner's office confirmed Thursday that the official cause of death of the late singer Whitney Houston was an 'accidental drowning'.

According to the report, it was determined that the 48-year-old singer was found to have cocaine in her system. Other contributing factors of her death included heart disease, a history of cocaine use, and marijuana, Xanax, Benadryl and other medications in her system.

Craig Harvey, coroner chief told People, "There was water found in her lungs that indicated to us that she was alive when she was submerged underwater. According to our tests, the level of cocaine was not necessarily a lethal level of cocaine. But her death was complicated by chronic cocaine use and heart disease."

Coroner assistant chief Ed Winter added that there were two possible causes that would explain the singer's death. "She could've passed out first due to the intoxication from the cocaine, or she could've had a heart attack and then drowned. It's probably one of those two scenarios."

Houston was found unresponsive in a bathtub in the bathroom of her Beverly Hilton Hotel room on February 11. She was pronounced dead at the scene soon afterward.

Coroner officials had confirmed that while prescription pill bottles were found in her hotel room, the number of pills were "not in alarming amounts."
