Academy Award-winner F. Murray Abraham will star in two thematically-related plays presented by Theatre for a New Audience in 2006. He will perform in repertory in William Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice and Christopher Marlowe's The Jew of Malta for the off-Broadway theatre company.

Dates for the plays have not yet been announced. Details for a planned London transfer of the shows are also forthcoming.

While The Merchant of Venice, with its tale of greed, corruption and mercy centering on the merchant Shylock, is more frequently performed than The Jew of Malta, both plays have attracted controversy with accusations of anti-Semitism.

Abraham, who garnered an Oscar for his performance as Salieri in the film version of Amadeus, has performed in numerous plays on Broadway. Credits include Triumph of Love, A Month in the Country, the Angels in America plays, Legend, The Ritz and Bad Habits. Off-Broadway, he has been seen in Trumbo, King Lear, Waiting for Godot, A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Fantasticks and many others, while other film credits include Mighty Aphrodite, Mimic, Scarface, The Ritz and more.

TFANA is currently presenting a season entitled "Love is a Problem." Its upcoming plays of the romantically-troubled include Measure For Measure, co-presented with Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, at St. Ann's Warehouse in Brooklyn (Dec. 20th-Jan. 1st, 2006), All's Well That Ends Well from Feb. 14th through March 19th, and Howard Brenton's Sore Throats from April 22nd through May 21st. The latter two plays will be performed at the Duke Theatre on 42nd Street.
