AUDIO: Gloria Estefan Says ON YOUR FEET! Deserves Tony For 'Best Should Have Been Nominated Show'

Despite its receiving only one 2016 Tony Award nomination, for Sergio Trujillo's choreography, seven-time Grammy-winning international superstar Gloria Estefan is full of praise for the creative talents behind the new Broadway musical ON YOUR FEET!, based on the career and romance she shared with her husband, nineteen-time Grammy-winning producer-musician-entrepreneur Emilio Estefan.

"To me it's magical what [bookwriter Alexander Dinelaris] did with these songs," she tells SiriusXM's Larry Flick in a special "Leading Ladies" interview. The Oscar-winning screenwriter and playwright had the task of creating a book musical that tells a dramatic story using the Estefans' pre-existing hits. "What he did with these songs is a lot harder than to actually write songs for a scene."

When Ana Villafañe, who makes her Broadway debut playing the music legend, expressed her disappointment for not being nominated and asked if she had ever experienced anything like that, the trailblazing Cuban-American vocalist answered, "A million times. And it shouldn't have anything to do with what you continue to do on that stage or in your life or any time you do any artistic thing. You can't do that for accolades or awards. That's insane."

Noting the enthused response the show gets from audience members every night, she concludes that ON YOUR FEET! deserves a Tony for "Best Should Have Been Nominated Show."

When asked if she would consider having concerts in Cuba, she replies that "The Cuban people need freedom and food much more than they need me singing songs."

ON YOUR FEET! is directed by two-time Tony Award winner Jerry Mitchell (Kinky Boots, Hairspray) and choreographed by Olivier Award winner Sergio Trujillo (Jersey Boys, Memphis) with an original book by Academy Award winner Alexander Dinelaris (Birdman, The Bodyguard Musical).
