The American Theatre Wing's Henry Hewes Design Awards Committee has nominated 57 theater artists for recognition of their outstanding work in 39 productions presented during the 2005-2006 New York theater season. The awards will be presented at a luncheon to be held in the fall.

These annual awards honor designers for work in venues on Broadway, Off Broadway and Off Off Broadway, recognizing not only the traditional design categories of scenery, costumes and lighting, but also "Notable Effects," which encompasses sound, music, video, puppetry and other creative elements. All nominated designs must have originated in United States productions.

Nominated work includes 17 Broadway shows, 17 Off Broadway shows, and 5 Off Off Broadway shows, from commercial and not-for-profit productions. The Hewes Awards Committee considered more than 200 productions when making its nominations.

The top nominated productions were Cathay: Three Tales of China, Super Vision and The Drowsy Chaperone with four each; Awake and Sing!, Grey Gardens, Tarzan, The Color Purple and The Wedding Singer each received three nominations. 10 productions received two nominations. Catherine Zuber received four nominations for her costume designs and Darron L. West received three nominations for his sound designs. A total of 12 artists received more than one nomination.

Originally known as the Maharam Awards at their inception in 1965, the Hewes Awards were later known as the American Theatre Wing Design Awards. They were renamed in 1999 for noted critic Henry Hewes, who created the awards and served as a board member of the American Theatre Wing until his death July 18 at age 89.

The Henry Hewes Design Awards Committee includes theater critics Jeffrey Eric Jenkins, chair; Tish Dace; Michael Feingold; Glenda Frank; Mario Fratti; Randy Gener; and Joan Ungaro.
