In celebration of this year's National Tap Dance Day (May 25) the American Tap Dance Foundation (ATDF) will present Tap Attack, a free, public, outdoor event held at the grave site of dance legend Bill "Bojangles" Robinson (1878-1949), for whom the national holiday is named, at The Evergreens Cemetery in Brooklyn from 12-1pm.
The May 22 celebration will include open jam sessions with ATDF students (children, teens and adults), the Tap City Youth Ensemble, the Tap City Junior Ensemble, and special appearances by top tappers and special guests. An impromptu free "beginner" class will be offered following Youth Ensemble performance, with loaner tap shoes available for anyone who wants to give tap dance a try. All will culminate with a visit to the grave site of "Uncle Bo." A picnic lunch and blanket are suggested.
Tap Attack will mark the 27th anniversary of National Tap Dance Day, a yearly celebration of tap dance as an American art form and national treasure. National Tap Dance Day falls on May 25 of each year, marking Bill "Bojangles" Robinson's birthday. National Tap Dance Day is celebrated throughout the United States, but holds special resonance in NYC, the birthplace of American tap dance. President George W. Bush signed national Tap Dance Day into law in November 1989."Tap Attack" is presented by The Evergreens Cemetery in association with Tony Waag and the American Tap Dance Foundation.
Master of ceremonies: ATDF Artistic Director Tony Waag.
