ASTEP has just announced its Artist as Citizen Conference- a four-night retreat for young leaders in the performing and visual arts, hosted by the Juilliard School. Participants are young artists, ages 18-25, who have recognized the power of the arts to transform their communities. The 2014 Conference is the inaugural conference and will take place June 2nd - 6th.

The Artist as Citizen Conference will unite high-level artists from the professional world (Broadway, Film & Television, Contemporary Dance, etc.) who actively use the arts as a vehicle for social change. Each day will feature group warm-ups, special guest speakers, roundtable discussions, and periods for reflection. Topics included for discussion: What it Means to Be an Artist Today, What it Means to Be a Global Citizen, Finding Your Balance, Developing a Personal Mission, Creating an Action Plan, Building Bridges through Art, and other issues of personal and professional development. The cost of the conference is $300 and includes housing in the Juilliard dorms and meals.

ASTEP was conceived by Broadway Musical Director Mary-Mitchell Campbell and Juilliard students to transform the lives of youth using the most powerful tool they had-their art. Today, ASTEP connects performing and visual artists with underserved youth in the U.S. and around the world to awaken their imaginations, foster critical thinking, and help them break the cycle of poverty.
