The Anthropologists evoke 17th century Baroque painter Artemisia Gentileschi to create a vivid portrait of an artist caught at the intersection of power, sexism and art. Inspired by every proclamation of, me too, Artemisia's Intent unmasks power structures one gripping masterpiece at a time.
Created with source material ranging from the 1612 rape trial to Taylor Swift's 2017 assault trial, this solo show features Mariah Freda who explains, "We're struck by the profound parallels between Artemisia's story and all of the many stories we are hearing today. We're fighting like women to break the system that enables this machine to keep cranking along."
The creative and production team also includes Melissa Moschitto (Script/Direction), Lynde Rosario (Dramaturgy), Brianna Kalisch (Co-Conceiver), Irina Kuraeva (Visual Design), Lauren Mitchell (Lighting Design), Adrian Bridges (Sound Design) and Mary Daniels (Production Stage Manager).
THE ANTHROPOLOGISTS is dedicated to the collaborative creation of investigative theatre that inspires action. Celebrating their 10th year, their work has been described as "eerie and weird in the best way" (Culturebot) and "incisive, even necessary work for the present moment." (Culture Catch).
