ANERGOS Premieres at Dixon Place

Christina Catechis, actor, director, and devisor, premieres Anergos, a physical theater piece fusing an honest observation of Greek youth with surrealism at Dixon Place Lounge today, May 31st at 7:30 pm. 161A Chrystie Street

It is in collaboration with choreographer Julieta Tetelbaum. It will also perform at the Manhattan Repertory Theater on June 3rd at 9 pm and on Sunday June 5th at 8:30 pm as part of Live Art: Series Five.

Anergos translates directly to 'unemployed' in Greek, but as a break down of suffixes also suggests 'not in motion.' Anergos physically explores what is behind the hindering of Greek youth to create beyond alarming unemployment rates, and satirizes how foreigners most typically think of Greece. The Hellenic spirit has remained indefinitely loud in life and emotionally intense, however in more contemporary times, is insecure about its overall potential. Catechis attempts to question this context through a family in late 60's Greece, denied the right to artistically express as a result of restrictions imposed by the junta.
