Update: Following this afternoon's announcement that Second Stage Theatre had dropped AMERICAN PSYCHO from its 2014-15 slate, the New York Times reports that Act 4 Entertainment may have pulled the production in hopes of going straight to Broadway.
Per The Times:
"Two Broadway executives said on Friday that the California-based Act 4 had been talking to New York producers recently about shifting gears and bypassing Second Stage in favor of a Broadway run, which has long been a goal of the Act 4 producers and the show's director, Rupert Goold. The Second Stage production would have cost Act 4 Entertainment an undetermined amount of money in development costs."
Original Story:
American Psycho's anticipated U.S. premiere at Second Stage Theatre has officially been put to rest.
Act 4 Entertainment has removed the musical from the Off-Broadway theater's 2014-15 season, prior to casting being announced, Second Stage confirmed this afternoon.
"We are disappointed that we will not be producing 'American Psycho' this season, but the rights holders, Act 4 Entertainment, have decided to not move forward with the production at Second Stage," artistic director Carole Rothman said in a statement.
AMERICAN PSYCHO, featuring a book by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and music and lyrics by Grammy and Tony-Award Winner Duncan Sheik, was to be directed by by Rupert Goold. The production was slated to begin performances in February 2015 ahead of an official bow in March.
As of posting, the individual page for 'PSYCHO' has been removed from Second Stage's website.
According to press notes, "26-year-old Patrick Bateman is sophisticated, rich and devastatingly handsome. He's got a sculpted body, a model-gorgeous girlfriend, a to-die-for apartment, and a Wall Street job in 1980s New York City. In short, his life's killer. There's just one snag in this dark vision of the American Dream...Patrick can't get the blood out of his $5000 suits."
AMERICAN PSYCHO had its world premiere in December 2013 at the Almeida Theatre, Rupert Goold, Artistic Director. The world premiere was a production with Headlong in association with David Johnson and Jesse Singer for Act 4 Entertainment by special arrangement with Edward R. Pressman.
