Following a critically-acclaimed and sold out run at the 2015 New York International Fringe Festival, Christopher Duva's adaptation of David Foster Wallace's essay, A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again, returns for a limited run as part of the Fringe Encore Series.
Produced with the permission of the David Foster Wallace Literary Trust, this groundbreaking essay by David Foster Wallace (Infinite Jest, Consider the Lobster) on the pleasures and perils of luxury cruise ship vacations has been adapted for the stage as a one-person show by actor Christopher Duva (The Voysey Inheritance, The Elephant Man [2002]). With slide projections created by designerChris Muller (Laurie Anderson's Scenes from the Nerve Bible, Alvin Ailey Dance Co.) and direction by Suzanne Weber (creator of numerous one-person shows as Anita Liberty - Aspen Comedy Festival, Public Theater, HERE), Wallace's essay becomes a fully-realized theatrical production.
The show describes how Foster barely survived the "insanity-producing pampering" he sustained while on assignment aboard a 7-Night Caribbean Cruise. From the solicitous fun-managers, the Dickensian crewmen, the beautiful Petra to Captain Video, the characters who populate the "floating wed- ding cake" come to life in this adaptation of Wallace's tragicomic tale of Americans adrift.
With numerous accolades (TimeOut Critic's Pick, NYTimes Top 10 at the Fringe, NY Post FringeNYC Pick), the show TheaterMania said was "as close to a tour de force as anyone's ever seen" and "deliriously entertaining" has been hand-selected by seasoned professionals in the NYC theater community out of over 200 Fringe NYC shows for an additional run as part of the 10th Annual Fringe Encore Series.
"From getting the initial support of the David Foster Wallace Literary Trust to receiving such a phenomenal response from audiences at Fringe NYC, this has been an amazing experience," remarks the team behind the play. "Now we are thrilled that a new audience gets to see the work of this brilliant writer performed by this wonderful actor thanks to the Fringe Encore Series and Soho Play- house."
