The Old Vic's production of A Moon for the Misbegotten, the most successful production of the Eugene O'Neill classic in Broadway history, has recouped all production costs on its $2.4 million capitalization in just 52 performances (as of the week 5/13/07).
Directed by Olivier Award winner Howard Davies and produced by Elliot Martin, Max Cooper, Ben Sprecher, Nica Burns, Max Weitzenhoffer, The Old Vic, Spring Sirkin, Wendy Federman, Louise Forlenza, Ian Osborne, Thomas Steven Perakos and James L. Nederlander, the critically acclaimed production starring 2007 Tony nominee and Olivier Award winner Eve Best, two-time Academy Award winner Kevin Spacey, Colm Meaney, Billy Carter and Eugene O'Hare plays the final performance of its 84 performance engagement at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre (256 W 47th St) on June 10th.
Originating last year at London's Old Vic, where it holds the record as the highest grossing production in the theatre's history, A Moon for the Misbegotten has been the highest grossing play on Broadway since it began a full slate of performances here the week of April 2nd. With a cumulative gross of nearly $5.6 million to date, the production has routinely outgrossed half of the musicals on the boards, a remarkable achievement for a serious play revival.
"O'Neill's only love story, A Moon for the Misbegotten tells the shattering story of Josie Hogan (Best), a towering woman with a quick tongue and a ruined reputation who lives in a dilapidated Connecticut farmhouse with her conniving father, Phil (Meaney). During one long moonlit night fueled by drink and lust, Josie's softer side is exposed through her feelings for Hogan's landlord Jim Tyrone (Spacey), and two implacable souls reveal to each other the grief, longing and unrequited love they've hidden from the world," state press notes.
