Alessandra Corona presents her A Corona Works in the world premiere of Ramon Oller's dramatic dance/theater work THORNS OF THE CROWN, September 9 & 10, 7:30 PM, at the Sheen Center for Thought & Culture, 18 Bleecker Street.
While THORNS OF THE CROWN does not tell a specific story, it is inspired by writings of Shakespeare, which the choreographer studied as a young actor in his native Barcelona, and deals with the universal emotions of amibition, jealousy, greed and, of course, love. Music is a spirited blend of original compositions by composers Thomas Lentakis and Bruno Axel, along with traditional Medieval selections (one piece of music, we are told, was played during intervals of the original Shakespeare productions).
Alessandra Corona, a native of Cagliari Italy (Sardinia) will be remembered as a principal dancer with Ballet Hispanico for 12 years, appearing in their regular New York seasons and on tour throughout the U.S., Europe, and South America, originating roles in ballets by Ramon Oller, Ann Reinking, Vicente Nebrada, Christopher Gillis, Graciela Daniele, David Rousseau, and others. Ann Reinking invited Alessandra to dance for two years in the international touring company of "Fosse," and in the City Center Encores! production of the Richard Rodgers musical "No Strings." Alessandra was trained in ballet at the National Ballet Academy in Rome, and in the techniques of Graham, Limon, Cunningham and jazz at the Renato Greco School in Italy.
Ramon Oller trained in his native Barcelona, receiving several awards for his choreography in Italy and Spain. He has distinguished himself as a choreographer with works created for companies around the world, including Ballet Hispanico, the Andalusian Centre of Dance, the National Ballet of Spain, the Compania Nacional de Danza, and more.
