Javier’s tribute to his father through a Heartfelt Performance
Javier Ivan, a proud Puerto Rican, has always embraced his roots with passion. Born in Toa Alta, Puerto Rico, Javier, now 31, pursued a Bachelor's degree in Drama at the University of Puerto Rico. Though initially drawn to sports, particularly volleyball, Javier found himself gravitating towards theater after participating in many musical settings both in school and church. Eventually, his passion for performing arts led him to train in various countries, including Mexico and Cuba, where he refined his skills in musical theater, acting, and film.
During his formative years, Javier had the opportunity to participate in local productions of Broadway musicals such as "Mamma Mia!" and "Evita."The audition for "On Your Feet" took place in Puerto Rico for a production intended to run locally. It was Luis Salgado who conducted the audition and subsequently directed the show. Unfortunately, the run was cut short due to a hurricane after just two weekends of performances, despite originally being scheduled for a month-long engagement.
However, Javier's journey with "On Your Feet" was far from over. When auditions for the national tour were announced, Javier seized the opportunity to participate virtually and was promptly hired to join the cast. He secured the lead role of Emilio Estefan Jr., as well as the character of Nayib, Gloria Estefan's eldest son, and also covered the role of Enrique "Kiki" Garcia.
Reflecting on his experience, Javier shares that portraying Emilio Jr. held special significance for him. One particular scene, set in Cuba, deeply resonated with him as it paralleled his own life experiences. Amidst personal challenges, including his father's ailing health, Javier found comfort in the character's journey of resilience and determination.
“The scene takes place in Cuba, as Emilio leaves for Miami, saying goodbye to his mother unsure if they'll ever see each other again. With tears in his eyes and his heart heavy, he promises her: "Mommy, I’m going to get us all to Miami." That line , I used to say every night on stage, holds tremendous significance for me because it was a very difficult process for me to embark on this tour while my father was in a delicate health condition. All of this happened just as I was signing my contract, and I embarked on this experience with happiness but also with pain for being away from him at a time he may have needed me. He has been my driving force during my entire life but specially during this show, and having him at the final performance before closing the tour was and is everything I could ask for. This character has definitely marked my path, connecting me with what it means to be Latino. The message of that line is very transformative and powerful for me.”
The final performance of the tour, held at the Hard Rock Live in Hollywood, Florida, was a deeply moving moment for Javier. Surrounded by loved ones, including his father and the real Gloria and Emilio Estefan, Javier delivered a memorable performance. Following the show, Gloria Estefan took to the stage to express her appreciation for the cast’s dedication, an acknowledgment that meant the world to him, especially in the presence of his father. Throughout the year and a half of touring with "On Your Feet," Javier cherished performances in various cities, but none compared to the significance of the Florida show, where his father was in attendance.
For Javier, having his father in the audience was a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of love and support. His journey with "On Your Feet" taught him valuable lessons about perseverance, gratitude, and the importance of family.
As he reflects on this transformative experience, Javier expresses profound gratitude for the opportunity to be part of such a meaningful production. He credits his castmates for not only enriching him artistically but also shaping him into a better human being.
Ultimately, Javier's journey with "On Your Feet" is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the enduring power of love and family. For him, the greatest reward lies in honoring his parents and pursuing his passion for performing arts.
