The 92Y Harkness Dance Center has announced the 2021-22 season, anchored by a new Mainstage Series of ten unique performances in one of the art form's most historic spaces - Kaufmann Concert Hall. The hall - where audiences witnessed iconic artists including Martha Graham, Alvin Ailey (premiering Revelations), Jose Limón and Pearl Primus - now sees modern-day dance pioneers FLOCK - Alice Klock and Florian Lochner; Hope Boykin; Yin Yue Dance Company; Jonathan Fredrickson; Harkness Dance Center Artists in Residence Passion Fruit Dance Company and Baye & Asa; AMOC's Bobbi Jene Smith; Caleb Teicher & Conrad Tao and more TBA creating and premiering works that move dance forward. The Future Dance Festival also returns after last season's digital debut, with in-person performances chosen by a distinguished panel of artistic directors.

The Mainstage Series marks the return of a full Harkness Dance Center season in Kaufmann Concert Hall in nearly 50 years. In person performances are once a month on Thursday nights from September - June and are available OnDemand for 72 hours.

The 2021-22 season also includes monthly evenings of unique improvisational performances with movement, live music and spoken word poets with The LayeRhythm Experiment and guests in 92Y's Buttenwieser Hall.

"The history of modern dance is filled with works created at and first seen by audiences at the 92nd Street Y," comments Taryn Kaschock Russell, Director of the Harkness Dance Center. "The energy and legacy of this creativity inspired this season, as we again provide a platform for firsts, for pioneers, for the future."

Building on the cross-disciplinary work of A Study on Effort ("chilling, thrilling rawness" - The New York Times), With Care investigates the dynamics of caregiving, carelessness, and loss through a theatrical fusion of dance, music, and spoken word. With Care was co-commissioned by ODC Theater and AMOC (American Modern Opera Company) in 2018.

Conceived during the COVID-19 quarantine to connect emerging dance creators with dance company directors 185 artists submitted their work to a panel of influential leaders in the field, who selected our 21 finalists who were presented over 3 weekends as part of our digital festival. The LayeRhythm Experiment & Guests @ 92Y

"[LayeRhythm is a] brew of partying and performing that unfolds as a series of interactive sessions in which suggestions from the crowd beget songs and steps. Imagine an improv comedy show where dancing, not laughs, is the currency. Then imagine a musicians' jam session where the band is compelled to keep the dancers' pace instead of the other way around. [...] what's distinct about LayeRhythm is the way it bridges the two groups with crowd participation." - The New York Times

The LayeRhythm Experiment and guests present five evenings of unique improvisational performances with movement, live music and spoken word poets.

Harkness Dance Center - 92Y School of Dance and DEL (Dance Education Laboratory)

The world-class dancers and choreographers performing in the Mainstage Series also lead classes and workshops for students in our classrooms and help train dance educators through DEL's professional training programs.
