Shawn Colvin, Shelby Lynne, and special guest Steve Earle, have been added to the lineup for the 8th annual Holiday Cheer for FUV concert on Wednesday, December 5th at 8:00 p.m. at the Beacon Theatre. They join the previously announced headliner Lucinda Williams, as well as the emerging band Lake Street Dive, who will perform a short set. Tickets for the concert to benefit New York's Rock & Roots public radio station WFUV (90.7 FM/wfuv.org) are priced from $40 - $120 (plus a $5 facility fee) and are available through Ticketmaster.
South Dakota native Shawn Colvin was an integral member of New York City's Fast Folk music community in the 1980's and 1990's and one of the first of those singer-songwriters to achieve commercial success. An 11-time Grammy nominee, she has won three awards – for Best Contemporary Folk Album in 1991 for Steady On and both Song of the Year and Record of the Year in 1998 for "Sunny Came Home." Shawn translated her gift for lucid lyrics into a vivid memoir, Diamond In The Rough, published earlier this year. She has lived in Austin since 1993.
Southern-bred Shelby Lynne released several modestly successful country albums starting in the late 1980s, but broke through to a wider audience with the 1999 release I Am Shelby Lynne. That led to the 2001 Grammy Award as Best New Artist, an honor some found ironic, since she has already released six albums over 13 years. Her recent releases include a holiday album and a tribute to Dusty Springfield, Just a Little Lovin'. Shelby has also worked as an actress, including the role of Johnny Cash's mother in I Walk the Line.
Special guest Steve Earle is one of the prime architects of alt-country. Raised in Texas, he came to stardom in Nashville in the 1980s and moved to New York City several years ago. Like Lucinda, he has been a 14-time Grammy Award nominee, winning the Best Contemporary Folk Album award three times. Like Shawn, he is an author, having written a collection of short stories and a novel. Like Shelby, he is a film and TV actor (most recently on Treme), and he is married to Shelby's sister Allison Moorer.
The two men and two women of Lake Street Dive, hailing from Tennessee, Iowa, Minneapolis, and Philadelphia, came together at the New England Conservatory in Boston. Combining their instrumental prowess with a love of all kinds of music, they create an infectious blend that is full of surprises. Their current EP, Fun Machine, reimagines covers of songs like "Faith" and "I Want You Back."
"We're ecstatic about this year's Holiday Cheer, and our initial ticket sales are the best yet," said WFUV music director Rita Houston. "When it comes to world-class singer-songwriters and performers, you can't do better than Lucinda, Shawn, Shelby, and Steve. Plus, we always love to turn the audience on to someone brand new who's creating a buzz, like Lake Street Dive. This is going to be a night to remember!"
Holiday Cheer for FUV is supported by Fairway Market. A portion of the evening's proceeds will go to support Hurricane Sandy relief and recovery efforts in the tri-state area.
