Six hundred and fifty historic National Theatre posters are now available to buy online.
"The images range from iconic photographs such as
Laurence Olivier and
Maggie Smith in Othello to striking graphics like those employed for
Peter Shaffer's Equus; and from
Gerald Scarfe's cartoon for Battle Royal to charming illustrations such as The Wind in the Willows. The photographic quality prints are available in a range of sizes and prices, starting at £5," according to press notes.
Gavin Clarke, the NT's Archivist, says: "We frequently get enquiries from people wanting to purchase copies of old posters, whether because they have happy memories of a particular production or from a general interest in theatre history; but we've rarely been able to help because we must preserve the originals we hold. This new initiative will enable people to access almost the entire range of
National Theatre posters, creating a rich research resource and an opportunity for theatre lovers to have their own piece of theatre history."
