Mitsui Fudosan America, Inc. (MFA) www.mfamerica.com, the U.S. affiliate of Japan's largest real estate company, announced today an exhibition of oil paintings by Dorothy Robinson at 527 Madison Avenue, located at Madison Avenue and 54th Street. A large diptych and four other large-scale oils will be on view in the building lobby from May 12 - September 11, 2015, and will be accessible to the public from 9 AM - 5 PM, Monday through Friday.

With their sweeping compositions and energetic brushwork, Robinson's paintings reference the history of heroic landscape paintings. Theatrical colors and sudden shifts of light describe massive forms and horizon lines, delivering a visual impact that embodies the experience-both pleasing and unsettling of standing before a dramatic scene in nature.

The use of landscape to evoke an emotional response situates Robinson within a long tradition in art history. However, her paintings are very much about the contemporary world. Passages that might be read as mountains or bodies intrude upon each other, shattering the notion of a stable environment. The artist is intensely interested in ideas of plate tectonics and the idea that over long periods of time, violent change of the earth's surface is inevitable. These ideas dove-tail with the fragility of human existence, as well as the certainty that larger forces beyond any individual's control shape our lives.

Robinson studied geography as an undergraduate and received an MFA in painting from UC Berkeley. She has exhibited at Slate Gallery in Williamsburg and Edward Thorp Gallery in Manhattan, and has been awarded residencies at the Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation, the Elizabeth Foundation and Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts. She has received the Alexander Rutsch Award for Painting and a grant from the Pollock Krasner Foundation.

This exhibition is the fourth in a series of rotating exhibitions showcasing noteworthy emerging artists. For more information about 527 Madison's exhibition program, please contact Jay Grimm, the organizer of exhibitions at 527 Madison at jgrimm@jaygrimm.com.
