A reading of the new play 27 Heaven will be presented on August 13, 2006 at Ripley Greer Studios in New York City.
"Writers Ian Halperin and Todd Shapiro and director Adam Roebuck bring to life four rock icons in a wickedly funny, haunting and rich parable that will rivet audiences with modern decorativeness and irony, and evocation of different times," according to production notes. "27 Heaven is a witty and powerful play about the conversations in heaven between four of the world's greatest rock stars all of whom died at the age of 27 – Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison and Kurt Cobain."
"The show opens at the time of Cobain's death in April 1994. Cobain must decide whether or not he wants to walk through the same, exclusive gates of heaven as Hendrix, Joplin and Morrison – whom have all been up there well over 30 years. Initially he seems keen to join the exclusive club as they share their experience, warmth and wisdom with him. But as the conversations wear on, Cobain realizes the three rock icons are more whacked than ever - Joplin still drinks excessively, Morrison becomes an Orthodox Jew and Hendrix turns to preaching the virtues of being a neo Nazi."Filling the roles for the reading will be Corey Corey as Jimi Hendrix, Amy Fulgham as Janis Joplin, Micha Lazare as Kurt Cobain and Erik Potempa as Jim Morrison.
The proposed design team for the tour and Off-Broadway production includes set designer, David Korins (Dog Sees God, Miss Witherspoon, Drama Desk nominee), sound designer, Duane McKee (Altar Boyz, Fosse, Rent), Michael Riotto (Cirque du Soleil), costume designer, Taphat Tawil, and movement specialist, Ha-Chi Yu (Fahrenheit 451).
27 Heaven will tour across North America between September and December 2006, before it opens Off Broadway in February 2007. A European tour is planned for summer of 2007.
