Tonight, at a celebration honoring theatre excellence on stages across the Washington area, more than 100 theatre artists and patrons gathered in the National Theatre's Helen Hayes Gallery for theatreWashington's announcement of nominees for the 2017 Helen Hayes Awards. The awards will be bestowed on May 15 at a gala event to be held at the Lincoln Theatre.

theatreWashington President and CEO Amy Austin was assisted in presenting the nominations by founder Bonnie Nelson Schwartz, actors Frank Britton, Jade Jones and Susan Lynskey, designer Deb Sivigny, and radio personality Robert Aubrey Davis. Austin commented, "Without a doubt, we are extremely fortunate to have an outstanding and diverse range of professional theatres in the region. The list of nominees is irrefutable evidence of the riches of this theatre community. We look forward to celebrating the nominees in May at the Helen Hayes Awards."

Recognizing work from 200 eligible productions presented in the 2016 calendar year, 236 nominations were made in 47 categories and grouped in "Helen" or "Hayes" cohorts, depending on the number of Equity members involved in the production. Nominations are the result of 40 carefully vetted judges considering 2,853 individual pieces of work, such as design, direction, choreography, etc. Performances by actors account for roughly half the elements under consideration. Productions under consideration in 2016 included 54 musicals, 146 plays, and 41 world premieres. (Award rules and other information can be found at theatreWashington.org.)

This year's Helen Hayes Tribute, to be presented at the awards event on May 15, will honor veteran and beloved actor Ted van Griethuysen, who has appeared in leading roles withShakespeare Theatre Company and Studio Theatre since their earliest days. Over the course of his career van Griethuysen has been nominated for 16 Helen Hayes Awards and has received the award seven times.

In 2016, five recently-established theatre companies completed the two-year process to be eligible for the John Aniello Award for Outstanding Emerging Theatre Company. The recipient, to be announced on May 15, will be chosen from among Convergence Theatre, InterAct Story Theatre, Mosaic Theater Company of DC, Nu Sass Productions, and Rainbow Theatre Project.

Named for actor Helen Hayes - a Washington native and legendary First Lady of the American Theatre - the Helen Hayes Awards celebrates excellence in professional theatre throughout the Washington region and has become a hallmark recognized by theatre makers and theatre lovers far beyond Washington D.C.
