2010 Tony Award Winners Speeches!

The Creative Tony Award Winners Ceremony, streamed live on TonyAwards.com has wrapped and the broadcast is underway! MEMPHIS won big with prizes for best book, score and orchestrations. AMERICAN IDIOT took home prizes for best set and best lighting. Best Musical: MEMPHIS

Oh my GOD. Thank you so much. What an incredible night this has been. What an amazing journey we have all been on! In 2002, our team wrote a great show about the first white DJ in Memphis, to put black music on the radio. I want to thank those 4 wonderful groups who have made this possible. To North Shore Music Theatre in Massachusetts, TheatreWorks in Mountainview, La Jolla Playhouse and 5th Avenue in Seattle - we did it, baby!

Best Lead Actor in a Musical: Douglas Hodge, LA CAGE AUX FOLLES

Wow thank you, thank you so much! What a welcome I've been given in this fair city. At just every corner people have been so generous, kind, and welcoming. I simply must thank Kelsey Grammer. Behind every great wife is a great husband. If you want to see a democrat kissing a republican come to the Longacre Theatre. Harvey Fierstein, Jerry Herman, what a gift they've given me, to all of us. Producers David Babani, Sonia Friedman, Barry and Fran Weissler, all my fierce Cagelles, the ensemble, the backstage team, and most of all to Tessa, my children, and Mum: I've been away from home a while, but this makes it all worthwhile.  Thank you very much. 

Best Lead Actress in a Musical: Catherine Zeta-Jones, A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC

Oh my LORD! How could Cinderella do it in this dress? Run down stairs in glass slippers? I'm losing my voice, but don't worry - I'll be in on Tuesday, my voice is better already! I'll be very brief because there are so many people - the producers, the great Hugh Wheeler and Stephen Sondheim wrote a little piece called A Little Night Music. Our cast and crew at the theatre are terrific. I'd especially like to thank the delicious and wonderful Angela Lansbury. I could never imagined a co-star of her caliber. Thank you so much, Alexander Hanson, my leading man, is a wonderful treat. How grateful am I to be nominated with such wonderful women on Broadway. My parents came in all the way from Wales! I like to thank them for making me the person I am today, and I do forgive you. I'd like to thank the team at the theatre, my family, my children. And that man there, who's a movie star and I get to sleep with him every night! Thank you!

Best Musical Revival: LA CAGE AUX FOLLES

Barry Weissler: Wow, this is indeed the best of times! LA CAGE is about family, it is about love - a true celebration of life. Sonia Friedman, the best partner anyone could have. Thank you to the most amazing company who brings so much joy every night, Kelsey Grammer, Douglas Hodge There's one person without whom none of this could ever have happened. Fran and I want to thank Sonia, Dave, the best partners.

Sonia Friedman: We're going to run out of time. We have too many people to thank! The most amazing company - Kelsey Grammer, Doug Hodge, Terry Johnson, the creative team. This show started two - three years ago. This is to David Babani, who runs the Menier Chocolate Factory.

Best Play: RED

John Logan: Here's the crew of RED! I wrote my first play almost 30 years ago, so this to me is the moment of my lifetime, so thank you. I would not be here if it weren't for Michael Grandage, Eddie Redmayne, and Alfred Molina. My thanks so everyone at Donmar Warehouse, Arielle Tepper Madover, everyone in New York, my friends Molly Hagan and Donna Bransan for keeping me sane, my parents for teaching me that a life in pursuit of the arts is worthwhile, to my partner for nurturing every dream I've ever had.

Arielle Tepper Madover: Thank you, Tony Voters and the American Theatre Wing, congratulations to everyone in the category. RED is the 4th play I have transfered from Donmar, proud. Powerful vision, breathless every night. Gorgeous working studio, without whom we would not be standing here. I love you, my beautiful husband and children. As artists, producers, creators, I believe it is our duty just what Rothko did - to inspire, engage, and foster new artists to work on their craft and make their art their own. Thank you.

Best Revival of a Play: FENCES

Producer Carole Shorenstein Hayes: Well! I guess emotions are ok so Scott, my wonderful Denzel, Viola, Kenny, this most magnificent cast. Thank you and Scott Rudin you are the most magnificent partner a person could have. August Wilson this is to you. Thank you.

Best Choreography: Bill T. Jones, FELA!

Thank you thank you thank you.  Well well well. Here we are!  Yes, yes, they're saying it back there - everybody say "Yeah-yeah!" Steve Hendel, Niegel Smith, Maija Garcia, they are my brain, Jim Lewis, my friend and co-writer, and what can I say about the queens. I thank all Tony voters for bringing me into this. My company tonight is at the end of a grueling tour in Venice, I want them to share this with me, Bill is at home with them as he has ever been. My companion, this journey gets more and more intense every year. Aaron Johnson. For all those who have made this possible, thank you very much. Everybody say yeah yeah! Mr. Fela Anikulapo-Kuti!

Best Actor in a Play: Denzel Washington, FENCES

Wow. I knew I should have written something down, but my mother always says man gives the award God gives the reward. I guess I got both tonight. I've been awarded by the Tony Award..What do you call yourselves? The Tony Committee, thank you. I've been rewarded by a brilliant cast. If you ever get the chance to work with Kenny Leon, take it. It starts at the top. I'm amazed.  I'm surprised and honored. I want to thank Carole Shorenstein Hayes for coming to me with this. And I'm blessed and honored and amazed. My beautiful wife, Pauletta, and the children at home...go to bed!

Best Actress in a Play: Viola Davis, FENCES

You know, I don't believe in luck or happenstance. I absolutely believe in the presence of God in my life. I was born into circumstances where I couldn't see it with my eyes, or touch it with my hands, so I had to believe it with my heart. And I want to thank so many extraordinary individuals and entities that have held me up. It starts with Mary and Dan Davis, my parents, the teachers of Central Falls in Rhode Island, my beautiful husband - I can't believe it, I feel like God
sent a blessing to the wrong house, but I'll take him. and this outstanding production of FENCES. Carole Shorenstein Hays. Scott Rudin, you have changed the face of my career, you are a magician. To Kenny Leon, the cast of FENCES, August Wilson. I think it's so fitting that the play ends with Gabriel opening the gates of heaven. I thank you, the American Theatre Wing for this award, and the extraordinary women in my category. I love all of you. Thank you.

Best Featured Actor in a Musical: Levi Kreis, MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET

Wow. Thank you. I don't think an outstanding performance can exist without a team that is working as a whole and I owe this to the most supportive cast and crew I have ever had the privilege of working with. To my reverend for holding me and making me more available to my good. I'd like to thank Mom and Dad for coming tonight. I'm so glad you did! Thank you very much.

Best Featured Actress in a Musical: Katie Finneran, PROMISES, PROMISES

I have so much to be grateful for. I have, like, twenty family and friends who came in to be here tonight. They're in the rafters. Darren Goldstein asked me to marry him last week and on Tuesday, Angela Lansbury took me to dinner. I'd like to thank Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, you're extraordinary. I'd like to thank Kristin Chenoweth, who lent me eyeliner, Sean Hayes, who's extraordinary, and Rob Ashford, who let me run with it. Most of all I'd like to talk to the kids at home watching. I want to tell you that all of us up here on stage and in the audience, we feel the same way. With the world being so fast, I want to remind you to focus on what you love. It is a roadmap to an extraordinarily blissful life. You will run into the right teachers. One day you will meet a person that will share that love with you. For me that person is Darren Goldstein. Thank you for sharing the love of the theatre with me. It's the light of my life and I know you all feel the same, and I'm so very grateful. Thank you.

Best Direction of a Musical: Terry Johnson, LA CAGE AUX FOLLES

Wow, uhm. I'd like to thank my fellow nominees without whom I'd have prepared a speech. We started a long time ago in a small room in south London and in that time so many people have entered that room and so many people have invented and worked and sweated and handed on until we ended up with our little basket of jewels. What I'm trying to say is that there are so many people not in this room tonight, but they're in my heart. They're who I thank tonight.

Best Direction of a Play: Michael Grandage, RED

Thank you very much indeed. As Eddie says, I'd like to thank Logan as well for writing a play about why art matters. Thank you for letting us being a part of this community. It's been a
privilege to bring it to New York and share it with this city. Thank you to the Donmar, the producers and to Arielle Tepper Maddow for producing us and supporting us. To Spotco, to Artie and all the men and women at the Golden, where this production is still running. To two extraordinary actors, Eddie Redmayne and Alfred Molina. No director could ever wish for better. And finally and to three of my oldest collaborators and friends - Neil Austin, Christopher Oram, and Adam Cork, the most wonderful designers any director could wish for throughout all of this - my inspiration and my rock. I thank you.

Best Featured Actor in a Play: Eddie Redmayne, RED

Oh man. Oh ladies and gentleman this is the stuff that dreams are made of. John Logan's play RED deals with the idea that art matters. And I've never felt that more keenly than in this city. Thank you for embracing us. I'd like to thank John Logan, Michael Grandage and his amazing creative team, the Donmar Warehouse, all those people at the Golden Theatre - Ariel and Josh, Jean, Dallas, and Joe.. Above all, Alfred Molina- you are a king amongst men, and it has been a treat and a joy and a pleasure to work with you. Thank you so much. This is amazing.

Best Featured Actress in a Play: Scarlett Johansson, A VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE

I don't know what to say. Being welcomed into this community has been an absolute dream come true. Ever since I was a little girl I've wanted to be on Broadway and here I am.  Unbelievable. Thank you so much. Thanks to the Tony voters, to the community, and to the producers. To Stewart Thompson for being the classiest man in show business, Jeff Finn. To Brian Lord and Jim Lord, in the midst of doing Iron Man 2 for saying, "Hey, I think you should go to this play for a few months. It would be a great thing.' I'd like to thank Greg Mosher for convincing me I could do it when I didn't think I could. Thanks to the cast for helping me to anticipate anything - you are the most generous group of people I know - Jessica Hecht, who taught me to never anticipate
anything, for finding magic in the unexpected. Michael Cristofer, and Liev Schreiber. You are truly the most generous actor I know. And I'd like to thank my family - my mother Melanie for pounding the pavement with me when I was 8 and for always supporting me. Thanks to the Canadian I live with and for supporting me - for becoming a theatre widower and constantly being there. I would like to dedicate this to Arthur Miller for writing this play, for sending little messages through wonderful words. Thank you all.

Best Book of a Musical: Joe DiPietro, MEMPHIS

Thank you. I'm having a Tony, Sally Field moment here, I don't know what to do. I have to thank my great collaborator who is a rock star. I never thought I'd be here tonight, my family never thought I'd be here tonight, the NY Times never thought I'd be here tonight. This is off the charts and to have our cast led by the amazing Chad Kimball and Montego Glover, and to blow the roof off the theater 8 times a week...I am such a theater animal, this is such a thrill for me. Thank you.

Best Orchestrations for a Musical: David Bryan and Daryl Waters, MEMPHIS

Daryl Waters: Yes, together, we made beautiful music. I call David my soul filter, because everything went right through him. I want to thank Chad and Montego and all the creative team for helping create this beautiful, original musical together. I would like to thank my dad, who's up in heaven, my mother, my sister, my kids Colt and Gabby, and my beautiful future bride.

Best Sound Design of a Play, Adam Cork, RED

This is an absolutely incredible experience! Thanks to everyone who voted for me, I'd like to thank the producers Arielle Tepper Madover, who's done such a wonderful job. Everyone at the Donmar Warehouse led by James Bierman. Our fantastic author whose play was such an inspiration of this play, the amazing cast, whose performances made this such a memorable production, Neil Austin, and I particularly want to thank Chris Kronen our wonderful US associate, Michael Grandage a massive thank you to him, not only for this collaboration but for others, he's been extremely supportive throughout my career. I think that just about covers it! Thank you!

Best Scenic Design of a Musical: Christine Jones, American Idiot

Wow, ok I was sitting in the center Row Q at a Wilco concert when I went into labor with my first son, Pilot. And I was sitting over there for the first Tony nomination for SPRING AWAKENING when I had just had my second son. And now this, this is amazing and I have two men to thank. Dallas Robert the love of my life, and father of my children...and Michael Mayer the love of my other life and father of my other children. Michael you are the Jesus and the Judy of Broadway. Thank you for giving me this to hold. Tom and Ira, this is what I call an enhancement. And Green Day, this one's for you. To my collaborators, Tom Kitt, Kevin Ddams, you make this like playing in a band. To everyone else for giving me that extra five feet of height. To all the idiots for bringing this to life. All I have to say to you is ...love happened here.

Best Lighting Design for a Musical: Kevin Adams, AMERICAN IDIOT

Thank you to so many people. Green Day you have been so generous with everyone. I have an amazing team of strobers. Production, electricians, head elect, house elect. strob progammers. My associate of 5 years. Thank you my assistants. Thanks Berkley Rep- Everyone there is so incredible. The electricians at Berkley Rep ---which also bought the wall for passing strange. an amazing creative team working on AMERICAN IDIOT. Tom Kitt, Christine Jones. Andrew Lower, Derek Maloney. But mostly i would like to thank Michael Mayer- the amazing person who brought us all together for the show. Thank you for conceiving and making this amazing piece of contemporary American theatre thank you for leading us, thank you for pushing us and making us all laugh. Thank you for this experience.
