The June 2009 broadcast of the 63rd Annual Tony Awards was honored this evening with a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Variety, Music or Comedy Special - Dave Boone, Writer and Special Material Written by Paul Greenberg. As previously announced, the telecast was presented with the Emmy for Outstanding Special Class Programs - Ricky Kirshner, Executive Producer; Glenn Weiss, Executive Producer; and Neil Patrick Harris, Host; at the Creative Arts Emmys on August 21st.
The Tony Awards was also nominated in the categories of Outstanding Art Direction for Variety, Music or Nonfiction Programming and Outstanding Direction for a Variety, Music or Comedy Special.
Executive Producers Ricky Kirshner and Glenn Weiss of White Cherry Entertainment previously won the Emmy Award in the Outstanding Special Class Programs Category in 2008 for the 61st Annual Tony Awards and in 2007 for the 60th Annual Tony Awards. They won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Special in 2005 for the 58th Annual Tony Awards. Weiss was also the recipient of the Emmy for Outstanding Directing for a Variety, Music or Comedy Program in 2003 for the 56th Annual Tony Awards. Kirshner and Weiss have acted as executive producers of the Tony Awards telecast for the past seven years. The Tony Awards are presented by The Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing.
The American Theatre Wing's Tonys Awards are presented by The Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing. At The Broadway League, Paul Libin is Chairman and Charlotte St. Martin is Executive Director. At the American Theatre Wing, Theodore S. Chapin is Chairman and Howard Sherman is Executive Director. For Tony Award Productions, Alan Wasser and Allan Williams of Alan Wasser Associates are the General Managers. Ricky Kirshner and Glenn Weiss of White Cherry Entertainment served as the Executive Producers of the 2010 Tony Awards. Mr. Weiss will also served as Director of the 2010 Tony Awards.
The 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards is airing live coast to coast tonight, on August 29 (8-11 p.m. EST) on NBC, originating from the Nokia Theatre L.A. in Los Angeles. The awards are being produced by Don Mischer and hosted by Jimmy Fallon.
