MCC THEATER has announced that Beth Behrs, the star of CBS's "2 Broke Girls," will lead the cast of the world premiere of Halley Feiffer's comedy A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Gynecologic Oncology Unit at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center of New York City. Behrs will be joined by Obie winner Lisa Emery, most recently seen on the hit Netflix drama "Jessica Jones," as well as stage veteran Jacqueline Sydney. Additional casting will be announced at a later date. Obie winner Trip Cullman directs the production which begins previews on May 19, 2016 ahead of a June 7, 2016 opening night. The design team for A Funny Thing Happened... includes sets by Lauren Helpern, costumes by Kaye Voyce, lighting by Matthews Richards, and sound by Tony winner Darron L West.
In A Funny Thing Happened..., a foul-mouthed twenty-something comedian and a middle-aged man embroiled in a nasty divorce are brought together unexpectedly when their cancer-stricken mothers become roommates in the hospital. Together, this unlikely duo must negotiate some of life's biggest challenges... while making some of the world's most inappropriate jokes. Can these two very lost people learn to laugh through their pain and lean on each other when all they really want to do is run away?
Beth Behrs star of the CBS series 2 Broke Girls created by Michael Patrick King and Whitney Cummings is currently in its 5th Season. Her film credits include indie comedy Hello, My Name is Doris opposite Sally Field and the voice of Carrie Williams in Walt Disney Pixar's animated film Monsters University. Behrs is also a co-creator and co-writer of the digital comic series Dents which will launch on the LINE Webtoon platform. Onstage, Behrs performed in "Backstage at the Geffen" at The Geffen Playhouse in support of arts and education and a special tribute to Carol Burnett. She also appeared on stage with the New York Philharmonic for their New Year's Eve performance One Singular Sensation: Celebrating Marvin Hamlisch. Beth is actively involved with charitable organizations such as Children of the Night, American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), The Rape Foundation and is a board member of the Geffen Playhouse.
Two-time Obie winner Lisa Emery has appeared on Broadway in Casa Valentina, Relatively Speaking, The Smell of the Kill, The Women, Present Laughter, Jackie, Burn This, Rumors. Off-Broadway, she also appeared in Marjorie Prime, The Unavoidable Disappearance of Tom Durnin, Lonely I'm Not, Sex Lives of Our Parents, Gabriel, Distracted, Abigail's Party, and Marvin's Room , for which she received a Drama Desk nomination.
Jacqueline Sydney has been seen on stages in New York and across the country. She won the Outstanding Ensemble Award from FringeNYC for Dear Harvey and received an NYIT Best Featured Actress nomination for The Kitchen Table. Additional credits include Target Margin's Money, Love and Shame!, Film Forum's Orson Welles' Too Much Johnson, and Machinal at Ohio Theatre.
A Funny Thing Happened... was a recipient of an Edgerton Foundation New Play Award.
