The Nuyorican Poets Cafe presents the Poetic Heritage Festival, a retrospective series of poetry, theater and music events during the fall and winter of 2010. The Poetic Heritage Festival celebrates the work of distinguished artists - including Miguel Algarin, Ishmael Reed, Amiri Baraka Sandra Maria Esteves and Ntozake Shange - who are closely associated with the creation and history of the Nuyorican Poets Cafe. This festival is made possible in part by the generous support of the National Endowment for the Arts' American Masterpieces Program. All events in the Poetic Heritage Festival will take place at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe's multi-arts performance space at 236 East 3rd Street, between Avenues B and C. This weekend (Fri & Sat 7pm) begins with staged readings of the 7 Audelco Award winning play 'DON'T EXPLAIN' by Sam Harps based on the life of jazz great trumpeter, Lee Morgan and ends on 10/10/10/ (Sun 3pm) with the 93rd birthday of Jazz great Thelonious Monk with the performance of Laurence Holder's 'MONK' starring Rome Neal (Audelco Award winner for Solo Performance) with music by Bill Lee (Spike's dad) Performances: October 8th, 9th, 15, 16, 2010 at 7pm (Fridays & Saturdays) and 17th (Sunday)at 3pm. $10

On MONK'S birthday, Sunday, October 10, 2010 at 3pm Of the Off-Broadway play Monk-The Play, by acclaimed playwright Laurence Holder and starring Rome Neal, directed by Holder and Neal both winners of the Audelco Award and National Black Theatre Festival Award for excellence in African-American Theatre. Also with music by Bill Lee (composer of the music score for Mo Betta Blues, Do The Right Thing, She's Gotta Have It.....) $20

Monk is a is one character play exploring the genius and mystery of jazz icon Thelonious Monk. The award-winning production of the play performed by Neal, Artistic Theatre Director of the Nuyorican Poets Café Theatre, has received many great notices in New York, including:
