This piece is based on a single cycle of eleven chords promptly presented in
the introduction and the end; each one of its sections develops with a stable
pulse given by the pianos and marimbas, overlapping with the winds and voice
melodies, which durations are determined by the tempo of the human breathing.
The resulting range of psychoacoustic effects is unprecedented in Steve Reich’s
previous pieces.
