Peninsula Players to Offer Pre-Show Seminar on Oscar Wilde

Peninsula Players Theatre, in conjunction with its production of "Lord Arthur Savile's Crime" will host scholar Christopher Chan, August 18 at 6:30 p.m for a pre-show seminar. Dr. Chan will speak on Oscar Wilde's life and works, including his short story which inspired the play. Tickets to performances are available, admission to the pre-show seminar is free.

Chan is a Lawrence University graduate and an International Goodwill Ambassador for the official Agatha Christie website. Chan lives in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and earned his Ph.D. degree in U.S. history from Marquette University. He also earned a Master of Library and Information Science degree from UW-Milwaukee.

He teaches online graduate history classes and was aguest columnist this season for the Peninsula Players Theatre column, Players Pen. Players Pen covers all different topics and connections with Peninsula Players Theatre and the company members behind it.

"Lord Arthur Savile's Crime" was written in 1963 by Constance Cox, based on a short story by the famous Irish poet and dramatist Oscar Wilde. This story was first published in The Court and Society Review in late 1887. The main character, Lord Arthur Savile, is introduced by Lady Windermere to Mr. Septimus R. Podgers, a chiromantist, who reads his palm and tells him that it is his destiny to be a murderer. Lord Arthur wants to marry but decides he has no right to do so until he has committed the murder.

Peninsula Players Theatre is committed to providing educational programming for the community. The theater has a long history of educational initiatives including an intern program that dates back to the founding days of the Peninsula Players in the 1930s.
