THE SOUND OF MUSIC opened at the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center on Tuesday, December 13 and will continue to play through Sunday, December 18. This new production of the show is a fresh, energetic take on the classic.
Rodgers & Hammerstein's THE SOUND OF MUSIC tells the story tale of Maria, a young Austrian woman who is out of place while studying to be a nun. She becomes the governess for the seven children of a depressed, widowed former naval officer, Captain Georg von Trapp. Maria wins over the family with kindness and song, and soon she marries Captain Georg von Trapp. However, their idyllic life is shaken by the Nazi rise to power.
The original 1959 Broadway production of the musical was a hit, but the 1965 musical film was what really won THE SOUND OF MUSIC the hearts of the American public.
Directed by Jack O'Brien, this production offers a new take on the classic. While THE SOUND OF MUSIC may seem stale if an older sibling forced you to watch the movie multiple times a week, this production is still lively, engaging and never feels done-to-death. Even the many children in the audience did not stir despite some content that may have gone over their heads.
The scenic design by Douglas W. Schmidt is beautiful and spot-on. The many sets and backdrops change frequently and seamlessly. The lighting design by Natasha Katz also helps set the atmosphere for the show, particularly during scenes at the abbey.
The cast do the material justice, which is high praise for a classic show with some complex vocals. Each cast member has a truly phenomenal voice and embodies the spirit of his or her character.
Kerstin Anderson is lively and energetic as Maria. She has a clear, piercing voice that sounds effortless.
Ben Davis is lovable as Captain Georg von Trapp. Even when the character is standoffish and rude, Davis's portrayal makes it apparent that his actions come from pain. Additionally, Davis's voice is full and resonant, befitting a naval captain.
Merwin Foard radiates charisma as Max Dettweiler. Foard's very presence in a scene brings an indefinable energy.
Teri Hansen plays Elsa Shraeder. Hansen adds compassion to a character that often seems cold, while still selling the wealthy, eager-to-impress vibe.
Melody Betts offers powerful, dynamic vocals as the Mother Abbess. She comes across as a loving and seeking what is best for Maria rather than punitive or angry.
The show really comes alive when the children are on stage. Each child does a terrific job establishing a distinct identity for his or her character and maintaining it even when he or she is not featured. They are humorous and adorable, and their vocals are precise and lovely.
THE SOUND OF MUSIC is a moving, entertaining show featuring a terrific cast.
