The Theatre Department at the University of Alaska Southeast works with Perseverance Theatre's Director of Education, Shona Strauser, to bring to life The Marriage of Bette and Boo by Christopher Durang. Strauser directs a group of students from UAS, who form both the cast and production team. The show plays April 5-7, 2013 at the Hendrickson Theatre, located in room HB 113 of the Hendrickson Annex at UAS. Tickets are $5 for students, $10 for non-students and will be available at the door.

The Marriage of Bette and Boo is a funny dissection of marriage and family in contemporary America. Bette, played by Taylor Vidic, is a young newlywed rushing to start a family, and her marriage to Boo, played by Bryan Crowder, turns out not to be the fairy tale, happy ending Bette had always wanted.

Beginning at the altar with the marriage ceremony, The Marriage of Bette and Boo follows the young couple as they grow and learn more about each other, all while surrounded by an assortment of odd characters from both sides of the family. The play moves quickly through three decades of madness, alcoholism, and divorce, loaded with heavy doses of irony and humor.

Christopher Durang (born January 2, 1949) is an American playwright known for outrageous and often absurd comedies. He received Obie awards for Sister Mary Explains It All For You (1979), The Marriage of Bette and Boo (1985) and Betty's Summer Vacation (1999). He received a nomination for a Tony award for Best Book of a Musical for A History of the American Film. His plays have been performed nationwide, including performances on Broadway and Off-Broadway. More information about Christopher Durang can be found here.

The Marriage of Bette and Boo premiered at The Public Theatre in New York City on May 16, 1985 at the New York Shakespeare festival.

Performances of The Marriage of Bette and Boo are at 7:30 p.m. Friday through Sunday on April 5-7, 2013 at University of Alaska Southeast, Theatre at Hendrickson, room 113 of the Hendrickson Annex at UAS, 11120 Glacier Hwy, Juneau, AK.
