Perseverance Theatre presents it's first poetry slam with The Love Sessions: from love to break up, and everything in between on April 18 at the 49th State Brewing Company. Doors open at 6pm, and the slam starts at 7pm. There will be cash prizes for the top 3 poets. This free event is being put on in conjunction with Perseverance's production of Cyrano de Bergerac, April 26 - May 6 at the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts.
Guest MC for the evening is the extraordinary poet Trey Josey. Trey is a graduate from the Anchorage School District and has been doing poetry in this community for over fifteen years. He is competed in state and national competitions. He is well known as realistic poet. He is one of the original founders for the Youth Leadership Poetry group in Anchorage. He currently works as a youth coach in workshop helping young free their minds through the power of poetry.
Poetry Slam Judges
Shyanne Beatty - Hän Hwëch'in Athabascan from Eagle, Alaska and Tr'ondëk Hwëch'in Athabascan from Moosehide, Yukon Territory. Known in Anchorage as a radio host at KNBA. She currently work at the Alaska Native Heritage Center, which is a cultural center and museum that celebrates, shares, and perpetuates the art, history, and culture of 20 unique Alaska Native cultures.
Darl Schaaff - a former male stripper, has been in Alaska over 40 years and owns Art Services North, Alaska's premiere event company. He is an award winning artist, successful businessman and holds multiple national and world medals in martial arts.
Jackie Purcell grew up in Anchorage and graduated from Bartlett High School in 1979. She attended Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash., graduating in 1983 with a degree in communications and a minor in political science.
Don Megga - His name is Kelsey Johnson, but he's more affectionally known locally and countrywide as the radio personality "Don Megga". He's often been referred to as the "God Father" of Hip Hop in Alaska having helped establish the state's first EVER Hip Hop radio Station! He is the host of a nationally syndicated Radio Program "The Megga Radio Experience" and he is also Co-Host of a family cooking show with his identical twin brother "KJ" currently airing throughout the entire state of Alaska on all ABC affiliates called "Double The Flavor". He is the creator and Host Of A seasonal Poetry Event called the Love Jones, Host of R& B Live and KamiKaze Karaoke coming this Fall to ABC and hailed as Alaska's favorite Radio Personality. He is a native of Mobile, Alabama and extremely excited to be one of our esteemed judges for tonight's Poetry Slam.
Loren Dixon - has been on the Anchorage airwaves sharing current, classic and local music on the radio since 1985. He has been the Director of Programming at public radio station 90.3 KNBA for 22 years giving opportunity to independent community program producers. A professional listener, Loren has supported Local songwriters over many years beginning with a Local Music sampler CD project in 1994 and continuing today as a volunteer producer for the Parlor in the Round monthly songwriter showcase. "Whether it's music or poetry, I listen for rhythm, passion, mood, tone, intent, and many other flavors which I find so important when a writers words are being spoken, not just read."
The Love Sessions: Poetry Slam is April 18, at 49th State Brewing Company, 717 West 3rd Ave Anchorage, AK 99501. This is a free event.
Cyrano de Bergerac plays in Anchorage, from April 26 - May 6, at the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts 621 W. 6th Ave. Tickets are available at ptalaska.org, Centertix, or by calling 236-ARTS. Discounted tickets are available for groups of four or more.
