Young Scout watches her father, the lawyer Atticus Finch, defend a black man accused of a horrible crime. Can Atticus secure justice for his client in this racially charged case, or does his influence have limits? Will the family pay an unacceptable price if he tries? See Harper Lee's beloved tale of a young lawyer and his family testing their limits and the unwritten laws of their time. To Kill a Mockingbird, written by Christopher Sergel, based on the novel by Harper Lee, runs March 14 - April 16in Juneau, and April 27 - May 7 in Anchorage.
The novel, published first in 1960, and set in 1935, portrays a time and place most today might only recognize from literature or film. But director Art Rotch notes that it's not difficult to draw connections to the present. "...it is impossible to live long with the story of To Kill a Mockingbird without Tom Robinson's martyrdom becoming the central reference of the title. He--a good man who made a kind gesture to a lost young woman--is the mockingbird that it is a sin to kill." The production is led by Art Rotch, artistic director of Perseverance Theatre. The cast includes Perseverance Theatre actor-in-residence Enrique Bravo as Atticus Finch. The play features Juneau youth Seth Coppens as Scout, and Keith McCoy as Tom Robinson. Actors from Fairbanks, Anchorage, and Juneau round out the cast. Dramaturg Julie Coppens will be leading post-show discussions with the cast and community members during the run of the show in Juneau, and Shirley Mae Staten will be leading outreach efforts in Anchorage. Special events will be listed on the Perseverance Facebook page and at ptalaska.org.Videos
