The Gavones of Philadelphia is a comedy about those traditional Italian-American values of love, family, greed and deceit. So says author Joseph Sorentino.
The Gavones have gathered for the funeral of their father, Pop, and they’re bringing all their baggage with them. Pauley, a security guard with a bad gambling habit is in debt to a couple of bookies who are getting serious about collecting their money. Pauley decides to rob a bank to get the money. Nicky, his brother, is a washed-up lounge singer, trying to convince his family—and himself—that he’s still playing big venues but his most recent gig was a VFW Post in New Jersey. He’s hoping Pop’s will has enough money to get him back on his feet. Meanwhile their sister Mary and her husband Tony are dealing with their son who’s just been dumped by his girlfriend. It’s a pretty wild time for a funeral, a bank robbery and a family reunion.
