Sarah Bernhardt (1844-1923) was a renowned French actress, often referred to as one of the greatest actresses of the 19th century. Born on October 23, 1844, in Paris, she was the daughter of a French father and a Jewish mother from the Netherlands. Bernhardt began her acting career at a young age, joining the Paris Conservatory and later performing in various theaters. She gained fame for her powerful performances and distinctive voice, becoming a leading figure in the world of theater. Known for her roles in classical plays, particularly those of Shakespeare and Racine, she was also celebrated for her ability to portray complex, tragic characters. Bernhardt's career spanned several decades, during which she toured extensively, including performances in the United States, where she became an iconic figure. Apart from her acting prowess, Bernhardt was known for her flamboyant personality and unconventional lifestyle, which challenged societal norms of her time.
