Chicago Tribune Faith, Fear, Lust, and Longing combust in Arthur Miller?s retelling of one of the strangest and most horrible chapters of American history ? the Salem Witch Trials. Award-winning director Norman Lewis returns to Las Cruces Community Theatre to illuminate the tale of a repressed town plunged into deadly panic and a family fighting to stand up for the truth at any cost. Spring, 1692. In the black of night, a Salem village reverend discovers a group of teenage girls dancing devilishly around a fire in the woods. When his daughter exhibits strange catatonic symptoms the following morning, the townsfolk are frenzied with tales of witchcraft. Deep-seated jealousy, deadly accusations, and seething resentments pit neighbor against neighbor and a deeply religious community is thrown into turmoil. A timeless parable about morality and the devastating consequences when fear takes root in a community, Arthur Miller penned The Crucible as a thinly veiled condemnation of the Communist ?witch hunt? of his time. The play won the 1953 Tony Award for Best Play and is considered a landmark work in the canon of American drama. This masterful and chilling portrayal of the historic Salem Witch Trials still resonates with our current world today. The Crucible pulses with the destructiveness of socially sanctioned violence, the power of hysteria and rancor, the blindness of zealots, and the heart of one tortured man trying to find his own goodness. ?The Crucible?: Outstanding production of a timeless story REVIEW By MIKE COOK Las Cruces Bulletin ?The Crucible.? We all know something about this classic of the American theatre that has been on Broadway three times, won all the major awards, been made into two fulllength motion pictures and adapted for television. Director Norman Lewis and a brilliant cast and crew have devised a fresh retelling of this archetypal tale at Las Cruces Community Theatre that will, literally, keep you on the edge of your seat. I know because that?s where I spent most of opening night. It is an immensely powerful story about the Salem witch trials that Arthur Miller wrote during the McCarthy Era. With outstanding work from Susie Ouderkirk (costumes), Lennie Brown (props), Ron Nash (lighting) and Karl Heist (scenic design), LCCT?s production will make you wonder if it?s 1692 or 1953, or possibly 2019. In addition to its political relevance, you will experience incredible acting performances by Darin Cabot, Nora Brown, Jeff Dolocek and Robert Sheehan. But this is, truly, an ensemble piece and every actor is outstanding: Janet Allen, Mia Berkson, Ed Montes, Jazmin Buchman, Brianna Horvath, Kyoniza Berg, Ilene Steele, Jeff Peckham, Kerrigan Sivils, Sage Drake, Karen Warren, Tom Warren, Gale A. Fulte, Calvin Chervinko and Lewis himself, who stepped into a sizeable role at the last minute in addition to directing. ?The Crucible? continues for two more weekends at LCCT, 313 N. Main St. Shows are 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, Feb. 8-9 and 15-16, and 2 p.m. Sundays, Feb. 10 and 17. For reservations and more information, call 575-523-1200 and visit www.lcctnm.org.
