The Golden Dragon Acrobats return to Popejoy on Sunday, January 20 at 3:00 pm. As one of China's finest touring acrobatic companies, the troupe's performance embodies centuries of traditional art.
The Golden Dragon Acrobats have created shows for over 25 years while executing gymnastic feats with precision and grace. One of the oldest living art forms, Chinese acrobatics has roots dating back 4,000 years. Beginning in the Xia Dynasty, routines were created around handstands, juggling, trapeze balancing, and even plate spinning.
Because it does not require many props, acrobatics became art form that anyone could participate in. Maintaining its recognizable style, Chinese acrobats flourished for centuries to come. During the performance, acrobats conduct a variety of flexibility stunts, tumbling, and dance routines.
The acrobats dress in complimentary costumes, playing into the mood of each moment. With a variety of acts, every show highlights several aspects of traditional Chinese art. When each new scene starts, the lights dim and stirring music plays. From start to finish, the show brings an astonishing experience to audiences across the globe.Originating from China's east coast, the Golden Dragon Acrobats are choreographed by Danny and Angela Chang. Today, the group has traveled to all 50 U.S. States, and over 65 countries.
Performing on Broadway in 2005, the Golden Dragon Acrobats won two Drama Desk Awards for their show. Now having performed for over 30 years, the Golden Dragon Acrobats bring grace, power, and beauty, to the stage.
