The Adobe Theater is presenting the delightfully offbeat Christmas comedy My Three Angels from December 1st through the 18th, 2016. Written by the husband and wife team of Samuel Spewack and Bella Spewack from the French play "La Cuisine des Anges" by Albert Husson, My Three Angels opened on Broadway on March 11th, 1953, directed by Jose Ferrer and starring Walter Slezak, Jerome Cowan, and Darren McGavin as the "Angels," and ran for 344 performances. It was brought to the big screen in 1955 as We're No Angels, with Michael Curtiz directing, and Humphrey Bogart, Peter Ustinov, and Aldo Ray as the three unlikely heroes.
My Three Angels is set on Christmas Day in French Guiana, where the temperature is a balmy 104 degrees. Three Devil's Island convicts are on work-release, leisurely repairing the roof of the combination general store and living quarters operated by the generous and trusting Ducotel family. Shamelessly eaves-dropping , the convicts learn that Felix Ducotel's evil-minded cousin, Henri, is arriving by boat and plans to oust Felix and the family from the business, and - as if that isn't enough - Henri's cold-blooded nephew, Paul, is jilting Felix's daughter for an heiress. The three convicts, using their particular skills (two of them are murderers, the third a swindler) decide to intervene and give the Ducotel family a Christmas they will never forget. Combining their criminal skills, and an unexpectedly passionate belief in true justice, the three convicts become - at least for a day - real life "Christmas Angels," even though their halos are slightly tarnished and askew.
The Philadelphia Enquirer called My Three Angels "a completely captivating comedy." The Christian Science Monitor said the play "exudes a welcome and congenial air of humanity." The New York News called it an "engaging and pleasant preposterous comedy."
Director Micah Linford says "I absolutely love scripts in which the comedy comes from the characters and the relationships that are established as the show unfolds. My Three Angels isn't just a series of setups followed by jokes, it is a well-rounded, and a little unusual Christmas story."
Linford has assembled an exceptional cast of Adobe regulars and newcomers, including Shangreaux Lagrave, Brian Jackson,Tim Riley as the three "Angels", with Bridget Dunne, Jeff Nell, Sarah Seaton, Doris Hargrave, Alan Hudson, and Jackson Krebbs.
Due to Christmas falling on a weekend this year, performances of My Three Angels will run Thursday through Sunday for THREE weeks, from THURSDAY, December 1st through Sunday, December 18th, with a 'Pay What You Will' performance (proceeds are shared between the cast and crew) on Thursday, December 15th.
