Over 45 years after its founding, the Swiss mime troupe Mummenschanz continues to captivate audiences around the world with its creative performances. With unique characters and innovative use of movement, the troupe has revolutionized the world of nonverbal performance. Their all-new production, you & me, explores human communication without words.
Mummenschanz performs you & me at Popejoy Hall on Saturday, February 17, 2018 at 2 p.m. Mummenschanz creates surreal and silly worlds with everyday objects like toilet paper rolls, ventilation tubes, masking tape, and old cardboard boxes. The members of the group explore universal themes of love, anxiety, fear, hope, and compassion through a contemporary take on miming. As the silent masters of masks, movement, and visual storytelling, the ensemble performs elaborate, funny, and poignant physical pieces that speak to everyone.
One of the troupe's founding members, Floriana Frassetto, attributes the group's success to its simplicity, saying that audiences are "whisked into a dimension of imagination in which they feel inventive as well." Frassetto now serves as Artistic Director and continues to tour the world with the troupe alongside cofounder Bernie Schürch. Mummenschanz premiered in Paris in 1972. They began a two-year Broadway run in 1977, transforming them from Swiss darlings to international successes. Since then, the troupe has appeared on Sesame Street and Johnny Carson's The Tonight Show, and embarked on numerous international tours. Their influence on contemporary dance and theater troupes can be seen in groups like MOMIX and Blue Man Group.
