Marin Theatre Company's Education Department invites children to travel through a new universe and create their own solar system!
MTC's lobby will be transformed into an immersive inter-planetary experience for children and families to explore before the show. Children will be able to construct their very own planets, as well as rocket ships in which to travel through new, uncharted solar systems that they can take home for more exploratory fun after the show. Each planet visited by the Little Prince in de Saint-Exupéry's story can be seen as an allegory of human nature. Through these lessons, the fantasy world of The Little Prince can be seen as not too far off from our own local and familial solar systems. Through participatory discovery, children will be able to connect their own creations with the world on stage.
The Little Prince, or Le Petit Prince, is the most translated children's book in the world and was voted the best book of the 20th century in France. Translated into more than 250 languages and dialects (as well as Braille), selling nearly two million copies annually with sales totalling over 140 million copies worldwide, it has become one of the best-selling books ever published.
After the outbreak of the Second World War, de Saint-Exupéry was exiled to North America. In the midst of personal upheavals and failing health, he produced almost half of the writings for which he would be remembered, including a tender tale of loneliness, friendship, love, and loss, in the form of a young alien prince fallen to Earth. An earlier memoir by the author had recounted his aviation experiences in the Sahara Desert, and he is thought to have drawn on those same experiences in The Little Prince.
Since its first publication in the United States, the novella has been adapted to numerous art forms and media, including audio recordings, radio plays, film screen, television, ballet, operatic works, and live stage plays such as the highly praised adaptation by Cummins and Scoullar.

ABOUT THE PLAY
When a pilot crashes his plane in the desert and is stranded with hardly enough food and water rations to keep him alive, he is surprised by the appearance of a young man: the Little Prince. As the days stretch on, the Little Prince reappears to the pilot every evening at sunset and unfolds a little bit more of his story with every visit. He explains how he came to be on earth, and the planets and creatures he left behind in the stars above.
The Little Prince's fantastic journey to Earth and the resonant life lessons he shares will delight and warm the hearts of families of all ages this holiday season.
"It is only with the heart that one can see rightly. What is essential is invisible to the eye."
- The Little Prince
Recommended for all ages | run time 90 minutes, including one 10-minute intermission
