The International Shakespeare Center hosts a two-week Shakespeare acting workshop led by faculty of the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA). Participants have the opportunity to receive authentic conservatoire training in the spectacular setting of Santa Fe, New Mexico.

One of the world's leading drama conservatoires, lamda has offered exceptional vocational training for more than 150 years. Experience their work firsthand this April and follow in the footsteps of some of America's greatest classical actors, from John Lithgow to Stacy Keach, and such notable British actors as Benedict Cumberbatch, Dominic Cooper, Ruth Wilson, and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Entirely practical, challenging, and fast-paced, this new two-week course is taught by Judith Philips, Head of Voice; Vince Manna, movement teacher; and Penny Cherns, Senior Tutor, m.a., Classical Acting. The course is ideal for students wishing to become more confident in performing classical work from Shakespeare's Elizabethan and Jacobean periods, giving participants a taste of the lamda experience and British conservatoire training at its best.

The program is limited to 24 participants who will be taught in two groups of twelve to study the key disciplines of Voice, Movement, Text, and Acting, culminating in a final showing of work to faculty, family, and friends on the final day.

Course Details:

Acting: Students rehearse scenes from selected Shakespearean plays, performing them for their peers on the final day of the course. Emphasis is on clarity, delivery, and the individual's comprehension of the material.

Voice: Students develop an understanding of their vocal instrument and how it relates to stage work and the demands of Shakespeare and the director. Technical exercises develop fitness, range, support, stamina, and creative flexibility. Text work supports work in rehearsal. Students study techniques to develop knowledge and practice of Stage Standard English. These include articulation and placement of vowels and consonants and auditory awareness for pitch, tune, rhythm, and stress.

Movement: Students work on freeing the body in connection with the voice and finding and maintaining the center; special work includes improvised movement and the actor's control of the body. Emphasis is on control and balance, frequently using set routines.

Dates: April 3 though April 14, 2017
