Mary Shelley published Frankenstein in 1818, when she was just 20 years old. Written 80 years prior to Bram Stoker's Dracula, Shelley's novel has long rivaled Dracula as the most epic and timeless monster tale ever created. Daughter of feminist philosopher Mary Wollstonecraft and noted journalist William Goodwin, Shelley's work transcends the mindset of the time by introducing concepts previously unheard of, and a compelling juxtaposition between monster and man.

Victor Frankenstein, obsessed with creating life, cobbles together an eight-foot creature from corpses, and reanimates him. Frankenstein's creation however, defies his notion of humanity. Appalled by what he has done, Frankenstein seeks guidance as to how to dispose of his creation before it can cause any harm to the nearby villagers. Frankenstein leaves the creature unattended and he escapes, eventually bringing tragedy to his creator.

This painful story emphasizes the capacity for selfishness in mankind, tampering with life for the sake of glory, and the tale portrays the complicated relationship between nature and industry. Riddled with death, illness and an excruciating need to belong, this classic story challenges our notions of right and wrong and begs the question-what is truly just? Honoring Shelley's legacy, Aquila Theatre's interpretation of Frankenstein is daring and innovative.
