Donna Loraine Contractor Exhibition Opens 5/5 at Tapestry Gallery in Madrid

Fine tapestry artist Donna Loraine Contractor debuts a collection of new works at Madrid's Tapestry Gallery, May 5-June 16, 2012. An opening reception and meet the artist opportunity for the show, "New Math Plus: More From The Universal Language Series" is Saturday, May 5 from 1-4 p.m. at the Tapestry Gallery, Firehouse Lane Ste. D, Madrid, NM.

"Behind the art that inspires us, and the beauty of the natural world that enthralls us, are the ordering principles of mathematics. By show casing the mathematical principles behind good design, be it natural or manmade, I hope to not only create beautiful art but also to reawaken in the viewer the wonder and appreciation for the beauty inherent in mathematics," says Contractor, of the new works she's added to her existing series, Universal Language.

The tapestries in the Universal Language Series illustrate geometrical principles and the beauty of mathematical ideas, and also enhance the viewers appreciation of the same through bold color and graphic, dynamic forms that can hold their own as works of art.

The New Math Plus additions to the Universal Language Series vary from reinterpretations of Pythagorean proofs and fractals, such as the Koch snowflake and Cantor dust, to tapestries inspired by the golden mean and Fibonacci numbers. Using new color schemes, these designs take on new life. Contractor will also introduce new fractals, such as the geometric version of the "Julia Set" as well as explore the work of women mathematicians throughout the ages.

Contractor's visual representations of the Pythagorean proof (a2 + b2 = c2), dynamic symmetry and irrational numbers, the golden mean and fractals, bring these often abstract subjects to life. Seen everywhere from the natural world, the human form and even in GPS technology, the geometry and ratios of Contractor's tapestries show the special mathematical relationships that humans respond to because we recognize their expression of parts to the whole in nature and our own bodies.

"I'm inspired by mathematics in my art in much the same way that Johann Wolfgang von Goethe conveyed in his quote, 'The beautiful is a manifestation of the secret laws of nature, which otherwise would have been hidden from us forever. When nature begins to reveal her open secret to a person, he feels an irresistible longing for her most worthy interpreter, art.' I strive to be a worthy interpreter of the laws of nature and mathematics through my work," Contractor explains.
