Dance Theatre of Harlem visits Popejoy Hall Wednesday, April 17 at 7:30 pm for one performance. Known for their inclusivity, the troupe cultivates and celebrates a community of dance welcoming everyone. Today, the company aims to inspire others by delivering a message of empowerment through the arts.
Co-founded by Arthur Mitchell and Karol Shook in 1969, the company initially practiced its routines in a Harlem garage. Now 50 years later, Dance Theatre Harlem(DTH) has evolved far from its roots as a small dance group to a multifaceted dance organization. In addition to the dance troupe, the organization also participates in community engagement through education.
Featuring 17 performers, DTH presents a forward-thinking repertoire including treasured classics, neoclassical works, and innovative contemporary pieces. While performing works by George Balanchine and resident choreographer Robert Garland, Dance Theatre of Harlem uses the language of ballet to celebrate African-American culture.
As one of the first African-American ballet troupes, the group advocates for ethnic diversity in the world of dance. This current tour celebrates Dance Theatre of Harlem's 50th Anniversary. This year, cofounder Arthur Mitchell passed away in 2018 due to heart complications. To honor his contributions, Dance Theatre of Harlem has also dedicated the tour to Mitchell's life.
