Antonio Machado (1875-1939) is considered one of the finest Spanish poets of the 20th century, along with Federico Garcia Lorca and Miguel Hernandez. An actor, playwright, translator, and teacher, Machado's early elaborate modernist poetry was transformed by the death of his young wife Leonore into a simple and sublime regard for both humanity and nature. Forced to escape to France by Franco's army during the Spanish Civil War, Machado died of exposure as well as heartbreak for his beloved Spain.
