Musicians J Wagner and Alexa Woodward will perform in a music night at the Black Box Theatre, 430 N Downtown Mall in Las Cruces on Tuesday, March 23 at 7 p.m. J Wagner's songs have been recorded by Victoria Williams, Calexico, Isobel Cambell of Bell and Sebastian, 3 Penny Acre, Gregory Allen Isakov, Brandi Carlile and countless others. He was labeled a numbered one best bet by both The Austin American Statesman and the Dallas Morning news. He has appeared at countless music festivals and was a two time Regional finalist in the Kerrville New Folk Songwriter Competition. The Dallas Morning News calls Wagner "A Texas Folk Music Staple" and Victoria Williams refers to Wagner as "A Wonderful, Wonderful, Song writer." Wagner's music has appeared in the Documentary film "The Porch" and has also been featured on NPR's Texas Eclectic radio show. While still in college he won the Texas Collegiate Songwriter Award and has been touring and crafting songs since.

Alexa Woodward's haunting banjo songs are rooted in the hills of Virginia and were refined in the roots music scene in New York city, where she began performing her songs in public. With a distinctive banjo playing style and lyrics that carry the listener into scenes and stories of raw human experience, Woodward has been well received by audiences across the US and in Europe. With songs featured on national television on season six of Fox's "So You think You Can Dance", this young songwriter has emerged as a creative force, performing for bright-eyed audiences in locations that include everything from colleges to festivals, sewers, and abandoned forts. Likened to Judy Garland, Neko Case, and Sufjan Stevens, Woodward communicates a range of human emotions through her voice and lyrics. Her songs hold a mountain tradition in tension with the honest experiences of a young American whose wanderlust has carried her into urban jungles, desert towns, and back home to the southeast.
