Feature: IN THE BLOOD at Aux Dog Theatre ImageA contemporary urban satire inspired by Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter, In The Blood will jolt your expectations and your senses. This subversive riff on "The Scarlet Letter" was nominated for a Pulitzer and was written by Pulitzer Prize and MacArthur? Genius Grant Award Winner, Suzan-Lori Parks, who also wrote the Pulitzer Prize winning Topdog/Underdog.

This follows our production of Phyllis Nagy's modern adaptation of The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne which played this past September. In The Blood takes you into the gritty underworld of American life where survival is an everyday challenge. Funny and frightening, you'll meet Hester La Negrita and her 5 fatherless children who live under a bridge in the American urban landscape.
The two Hesters in these two adaptations are bellwethers for their place and time, the 17th century and the 21st; each must adapt to every challenge and find a way to survive. Both adaptations ask how can we preserve love and family while recreating home in a community that stigmatizes and shames us instead of "giving us a leg up." The comparison and contrast illuminates the original themes found in Hawthorne's masterpiece.
The actors play dual roles with the exception of Angela Littleton as Hester. Also in the ensemble: Darryl De Loach, Charlene Fox, Savon J. Salters, Alex Prince and Michelle Varela.
In The Blood was Co-Directed by Linda Piper and Alexandra Buresh.

In The Blood opened November 16th and runs Friday-Sunday through December 16th. Friday and Saturday shows are at 8 PM, and Sunday performances are at 2. Tickets may be purchased online at http://www.auxdogtheatre.org, by phone at 505-596-0607, or at the door.
