Aux Dog Theatre Nob Hill is presenting the international musical comedy sensation, Dan Goggin's NUNSENSE opening June 26th for a summer run. The show is directed by Aux Dog Artistic Associate, Kristine Holtvedt (director of Venus In Fur and head of the Acting Program at Purdue University), with Musical Direction by Aux Dog Artistic Associate Nathaniel Flake (musical direction of Mr. Burns, a post-electric play), Choreography by Lisette Graham Herrera, Sound and Lighting Design by Lucas Zuniga and Stage Management by Tobanna Barker.
NUNSENSE, the perennial crowd-pleaser and second-longest-running Off-Broadway show in history (only The Fantasticks has a longer run), is the perfect summer family entertainment featuring five outstanding Albuquerque actor/singer/dancers and one puppet as the wacky Little Sisters of Hoboken.
The production stars Aux Dog Artistic Associates: Lisa Fenstermacher as Sr. Hubert, Kir Kipness as Sr. Mary Leo, Angela Littleton as Mother Superior Sr. Mary Regina, and Jessica Osbourne as Sr. Mary Amnesia, with newcomers to the Aux Dog stage, Tiffany Neeley as Sr. Myopia, and Wendy Traylor as Sr. Robert Anne.
Playwright/Composer/Lyricist Dan Goggin's story of 5 desperate nuns trying to raise enough cash to bury four sisters who died of food poisoning and are being kept on ice, has been called "habit forming."
Director Kristine Holtvedt remarked: "At first glance, Nunsense reads like cotton candy tastes: delicious, fun and gone as soon as you taste it. What could be lighter theatrical fare than 5 dancing, singing nuns in a sweet farce of a musical? But there are more poignant issues at the core of this wonderful and wacky musical. Each nun reveals, to the audience - not to their Sisters - long held aspirations or personal stories they've kept to themselves. We glimpse the heart, the history, the hope and the humanity beneath the Habits. And we are embraced by their pure and abiding love for each other, for us and for their chosen vocation, serving others, not themselves. Playwright and composer Dan Goggin said that each of these characters is based on a nun he knew growing up Catholic. I would love to have known them, too. They are eccentric, endearing and very, very funny. It would be a sin to miss it!"
The original production of Nunsense opened in 1985 at the Off-Broadway Cherry Lane Theatre, moving to the Douglas Fairbanks Theater for the majority of its ten year run. It ran for 3,672 performances, becoming the second-longest running Off-Broadway show in history (after The Fantasticks). By the time it closed, it had become an international phenomenon translated into at least 26 languages with more than 8,000 productions worldwide.
