More theatrical performances take place every weekend here in Albuquerque than in any other U.S. city of its size. Live drama offerings range from musicals to dramas to comedies, Christian plays, children's theatre, improvisational cabaret, Shakespearean classics, American standards, and new work by emerging playwrights from a variety of backgrounds.

The Water Engine: set as a classic melodrama, is the story of Charles Lang, a poor young factory worker who invents an engine that runs on water. Big business interests try to force him to sell the rights to his engine and, failing that, put his life in jeopardy. The Water Engine is set in the studio of a radio station in 1934, during "The Century of Progress Exposition" at the Chicago World's Fair and is a "radio play within a play." Back to the 80's: Join the graduating class of William Ocean High School as they live through their senior year - as they experience the fun, the heartbreak, the loves, and the loneliness of growing up... all set to the biggest hits of the 80s. CATS: Freshly re-imagined as an intimate, stripped-down chamber musical by award winning co-directors and co-choreographers Hal Simons and Wendy Leverenz-Barker, and featuring some of the best talent in Albuquerque, this version is still sure to delight both young and old audiences. Based on T.S. Eliot's "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats," the score contains the now popular standard, "Memory", along with many other great songs from the composer of The Phantom of the Opera and Jesus Christ Superstar. The Dolls present the Important of Being Ernest: The Importance of Being Earnest is true to Oscar Wilde's original production but The Dolls put their own unique twist on it (including the magical appearance of Oscar himself). Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?: The Vortex Theatre will be presenting "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf," a well-known drama written by Edward Albee and made famous by ElizaBeth Taylor and Richard Burton in the 1966 film version. A late night party with two married couples turns into an evening of vicious mind games, revealing the buried secrets of both couples. Seven Interviews: An evening of seven one-act plays, ranging in tone from wildly comedic to the achingly tragic, each a different form of interview, and each a different snapshot of the human condition. The Q: A New Beginning: At first glance, the residents of The Q have little in common aside from their penchant for drama. Diversity is the key word in town: Cowboys and cops, the wealthy and working class, lovers and enemies mix amidst a collection of different races, religions and families. Upon closer inspection, it becomes apparent these disparate individuals all share the desire to triumph in The Q, an Improvised Soap Opera. SCOOBY DOO: THE ROOSICAL: Based on the classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon, Scooby Doo the Roosical is a musical parody of Scooby and the gang. As Mystery, Inc. gathers for one more night before their final retirement, of course, a mystery unfolds. Villainous alliances, Broadway tunes, and a look at the gang you've never seen before. From having their every move followed to saving Daphne from an enemy who is closer than they think. They must endure hoodwinks and hijinks and burst into a couple of songs along the way while also finding their true selves and solving one last mystery. Join Freddie, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy, Scooby, and some new and old friends for a roosical adventure! The Love Song of J. Robert Oppenheimer: "Do I dare disturb the universe?" J. Robert Oppenheimer's rise and fall erupt in this kaleidoscopic play exploring questions of faith, conscience, and the consequences of the never-ending pursuit of knowledge. Betrayal: Betrayal is a powerful play by the late Harold Pinter, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature. Jerry was Best Man at Robert's marriage to Emma, but after several years, he and Emma embark on an affair. However, adultery leads to more subtle forms of "betrayal." The play examines events in reverse order, starting after the end of the affair and ending with the scene in which it began. A wonderful, psychological drama. Little Big Horn: Original Native American theater finds a stage in the VSA North Fourth Art Center's Two Worlds program in Fall 2009. Now in its fourth year, Two Worlds presents the premiere of Cherokee playwright Alan Kilpatrick's "Little Big Horn," an edgy, rollicking farce set in an American embassy in the Middle East. The play is a funny and insightful look into Native American culture and the way it is perceived by others. Shakespeare in Hollywood: It's 1934, and Shakespeare's most famous fairies, Oberon and Puck, have magically materialized on the Warner Brothers Hollywood set of Max Reinhardt's "A Midsummer Night's Dream". Instantly smitten by the glitz and glamour of show biz, the two are ushered onto the silver screen to play...who else...themselves! With a little help from a feisty flower, blonde bombshell, movie moguls and arrogant "asses" are tossed into loopy love triangles with raucous results.
